The Dark Corners of the Night by Meg Gardiner
BOOK 27 OF 2021
RATING: 4.5/5
The UNSUB series is truly one of my favourites. As I mention at any book of this series I review, I've found that I enjoy mystery/suspense novels instead of thrillers. It feels like a better payoff to read a book where you don't necessarily know who did it, but are along for a great ride with those who are solving it, as opposed to a thriller where the killer is a character you know but somehow always feels disappointing.
Gardiner is a master at atmospheric, fast paced writing. I loved following Caitlin Hendrix on this beyond messed up journey of hunting down the Midnight Man, a serial killer who breaks into houses, kills the parents, and leaves the children alive (but, obviously traumatized). One thing I can always count on Gardiner for: quality storytelling. There is no second or third book 'slump' in this series. It's just so good. Check out my reviews for UNSUB, and the sequel Into the Black Nowhere.
Let's just say I was worried this was a trilogy and we wouldn't have any more Caitlin Hendrix stories.... but I was pleasantly surprised at the end of the book ;)
