Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman
BOOK 35 OF 2021
RATING: 4.5/5
The Owens family has a special place in my heart. I love Hoffman’s portrayal of magic and how grounded it is in reality. The Rules of Magic is still my favourite of this series, but I still loved reading about Maria’s story. It didn’t end how I thought it would!
Magic Lessons starts at the very beginning of the Owens bloodline: Maria Owens. Abandoned in a snowy English field in the 1600s, she is taken under the care of Hannah Owens, who sees Maria's potential and teaches her about the "Nameless Arts". As she gets more comfortable with her *~magic~* she learns some hard lessons and inflicts a curse that will haunt her family for generations to come.
I picked this one up after watching WandaVision because I was having a serious witch moment and I loveddddd Rules of Magic and was really looking forward to reading the third instalment of the Practical Magic series. It did not disappoint.
Hoffman is a true literary fiction lovers dream. She can weave together a beautiful fantastical story with such humanity. The good news is she has a hefty backlist for me to dive into, even though I'll miss this witchy family.
