June Book Reviews and Highlights
I read 9 books this month and some were so soooo good. Almost all were physical books: I listened to Animal (blah) and read Meet Me in Another Life on my kobo.
My two standouts were THE BRIGHT LANDS and HIGHWAY OF TEARS.
MEET ME IN ANOTHER LIFE (60): magical realism full of what if's and what happened? ⭐️⭐️⭐️
ANIMAL (61): provocative for the sake of it. It felt pretentious, I didn't enjoy, but Emma Roberts was a great narrator for the audio.⭐️⭐️
MALIBU RISING (62): fun and summery and has that TJR magic, just doesn't have the charm as some of her older works. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
HIGHWAY OF TEARS (63): a look into Highway 16, the location of many missing and murdered Indigenous women for decades. Should be required reading for every Canadian. I learned so much and liked how McDiarmid told so many personal stories. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
THE BRIGHT LANDS (64): Stephen King meets Friday Night Lights. Dark, mysterious, and unputdownable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
BETH AND AMY (65): a comfort read for me because Little Women is one of my favourite books. It's nostalgic, heartwarming and full of family love. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
SPLIT TOOTH (66): unfortunately a forgettable read for me, but I liked the vignettes and the author's lyricism. ⭐️⭐️💫
CROWN OF MIDNIGHT (67): a fun follow-up to TOG. I will admit I don't remember much of what happened in this book besides the ending, but I can't wait to keep reading! ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HERE (68): beautiful coming of age memoir weaving in Habib's explorations on faith, love, art, sexuality and finding her truest self. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
