Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier
BOOK 20 OF 2021
RATING: 4/5
Ooooo, this book was DARK!
In high school, Geo's best friend Angela was murdered. It wasn't until 14 years later, it's revealed that it was Geo's boyfriend (Calvin) at the time who killed her and Geo knew about it. After being sentenced to prison for five years, Geo is finally out and then dead girls start popping up in her town... mysteriously murdered and buried the exact same way Angela was. Who is sending her this message, and is there something else Geo isn't behing honest about?
We follow Geo through three major points in her life: in high school, in prison, and in present day. Sometimes the jumping back and forth between these timeline's was a bit jarring and it would take a few paragraphs for me to figure out where the heck we were, but I digress.
I was teetering between a 3.5 and 4, but ended up settling on a 4 star because I just could not put the book down: the writing was gripping, a few twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, and even though I figured out the ending (humble brag) it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book. There aren't really too many characters to root for (maybe Geo's dad?? lol), but I'm not the kind of person who needs a picture perfect protagonist to enjoy a book.
