In My Own Moccasins by Helen Knott

BOOK 45 OF 2021

RATING: 5/5

My #1 stand out read of this month was this book. Such a beautifully written, honest, raw, vulnerable story. I want to make an effort to read more Indigenous stories this, both nonfiction/memoir, and this is absolutely one I will be recommending for people looking to diversify their reading.

Here's the book's excerpt from Goodreads: Helen Knott, a highly accomplished Indigenous woman, seems to have it all. But in her memoir, she offers a different perspective. In My Own Moccasins is an unflinching account of addiction, intergenerational trauma, and the wounds brought on by sexual violence. It is also the story of sisterhood, the power of ceremony, the love of family, and the possibility of redemption.

With gripping moments of withdrawal, times of spiritual awareness, and historical insights going back to the signing of Treaty 8 by her great-great grandfather, Chief Bigfoot, her journey exposes the legacy of colonialism, while reclaiming her spirit.

You will feel like you are friends with Helen when reading this book. You will feel her pain, her trauma, and feel your heart get full when she has her wins.
