Earthlings by Sayaka Murata

BOOK 37 OF 2021

RATING: 3/5

I don't really have much to say about this book other than it was WEIRD. But thought provoking. And quirky. And intriguing. But mostly weird,

Natsuki isn't human. She is actually an alien from another planet, or maybe a witch. She spends the summers with her cousin Yuu plotting their eventual return to their home planet, until something happens that threatens to separate the two forever. They make one promise to each other: to survive so they can go back 'home' one day.

Years later: Natsuki is doing her best to survive with her asexual husband and pretending to be 'normal' so she can one day reunite with Yuu. When the opportunity presents itself... will he remember their pact, and more importantly, will he help her get to where she needs to go?

Guys, honestly, some of the stuff that happens in this book is mind boggling. If these pages could talk and show you the faces I was making as I was reading it... especially those last 30 or so pages... wow. I will say though, Murata is an expert at weaving together a narrative that challenges the status quo. Much like Convenience Store Woman

If you're in the mood for a bizarre, thought provoking book, I would recommend Convenience Store Woman before this one BUT definitely think this one is worth the read if you can stomach it!
