Book Review: This is My America by Kim Johnson

Book: 129/150

Rating: 5/5

This book is phenomenal.

Sometimes it pays off when I only buy a book solely for it's cover. I knew nothing about this book

other than it follows seventeen year old Tracy Beaumont, a determined young woman who writes to Innocence X every week to ask them to support her father's defense as he is wrongfully on death row for murder.

That's it. That's all I knew going into it. Even reading the book jacket (after I read the book) there is a lot more plot detail in there that I wasn't expecting when I first picked up the book. The story is gripping, upsetting, frustrating, inspiring, and important. There's some mystery, romance, familial relationships, with topics on the American justice system, reentry into society, class, and race. The characters (especially Tracy draw you in from page 1) and this is one you won't want to stop reading until it's over.

It is an absolutely fantastic read, and one that is incredibly timely.
