Book Review: The Roommate by Rosie Danon
Book: 146/150
Rating: 3.5/5
I was hoping to like this one more than I did but with that being said I still really enjoyed it!
Clara the predictable one, makes the decision to move across the country to L.A. to move in with her longtime friend and lifelong crush. After she makes the move, he tells her that his band is going on a tour and he signed his lease over to someone else. Clara is less than thrilled considering one of the main reasons she moved out there was for Emmett... but decides to stick it out a bit and see how she does.
Curious about her new roommate, the confident and mysterious Josh, a quick Google search tells Clara how Josh made a name for himself. Clara realizes that her living with him could be the most scandalous thing for her coastal elitist family... but when living with him, she feels a sense of empowerment she's never felt before. An empowerment that leads her to recognize women deserve better sex and teams up with Josh to tackle the stigma of female desire.
What I loved:
- Josh (read the book you'll see I don't have to elaborate any more than this)
- The steam was perfect!
- How the author tackled a 'taboo' topic and stigmatized industry. Often rom com's can have rather surface level plot but this one was really well thought out and was a great backdrop to the story.
What I didn't love:
- The writing felt really choppy at times especially at the beginning. It was hard to read with especially the first few chapters being really heavy on dialogue
- I felt that Clara's dialogue was SO strange. The way she says and phrases things.. people just don't talk like that in real life! I get the author is trying to make her seem tightly wound and from different circles from Josh but it was really cringey to me.
That being said: this book helped me get out of a big reading slump. For four days I didn't read any more than about 10 pages a day. I binged this one in two days and did laugh out loud a few times and the story took me by surprise in a great way.
If you're looking for a fun and steamy rom com this is it!
