Book Review: The Holdout by Graham Moore
Book: 124/150
Rating: 4/5
This was one of my 'in transit right before the library shut down' books and once I picked this one up I COULD NOT STOP READING IT.
It is the 10 year anniversary of one of the most sensational trials: fifteen year old daughter of a billionaire Jessica Silver disappears on her way home from school and is never seen again. The prime suspect is Bobby Nock, a Black man, who is Jessica's teacher. Maya Seale, a young woman on the jury is convinced of Nick's innocence, and convinces the rest of the jury to vote not-guilty.
Flash forward 10 years. Maya is a defense attorney herself, and the media is ablaze with it being the 10 year anniversary of this trial. A true crime docuseries is bringing the jury together again to discuss the case. One of the other jurors, Rick, who was really close with Maya at the time of the trial, is convinced he has new evidence that proves Bobby is guilty. Maya is unconvinced; and later, Rick turns up dead in Maya's hotel room, and Maya becomes the prime suspect. So.... what evidence did Rick have? Who killed Rick? And what really happened to Jessica Silver?
I know that sounds like it gives the entire book away but all of that happens within the first 50 pages. Throughout the rest of the book, there are little revelations and twists that pop up to keep you guessing.
I thought this one would be a five star for me but there was something that really bothered me that I thought would be an easy way to exonerate a character (I don't want to say what it was because it may be considered a spoiler). I still really liked this one and would highly recommend it!
Overall this was still a really great read. I like that it's a courtroom drama where you get the jury's perspective (which made it different from other courtroom based books I've read).
