Book Review: Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad
Book: 133/150
Rating: 4.5/5
I’ve been working my way through Me and White Supremacy throughout August. It’s essentially a 28 day “workbook” of sorts where each chapter is on a different topic (IE, white silence, white apathy, you and white feminism, etc) where Saad shares some history and cultural anecdotes and provides the reader with some journal prompts and questions at the end of each chapter. The book works to teach readers how to take the steps to dismantle the privilege within themselves so they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damages on people of colour, and in turn, help white people do better too.
If you are looking to be an ally and be an anti racist, I strongly encourage you to pick this book up. I definitely think reading to learn is important, but this one has an edge on other anti racist books I’ve seen (and read) that makes the reader actively engage with the content through journaling, answering questions, ad engaging in self-reflection. While I did find some of the back to back content and journal prompts repetitive, I’ve learned a lot and it’s definitely a book I’ll be coming back to and referencing.
