Book Review: I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid
Book: 17/100
Rating: 5/5
Summary: A girl is accompanying her boyfriend, Jake, to his parents house. It's her first time meeting them, and it'll be a bit awkward for her because she's been thinking of ending things with Jake for a while. After a bizarre dinner, they take an unexpected detour on their way home, she is left stranded in a deserted high school. What unfolds next is suspenseful, intense, and utterly mind boggling.
Thoughts: This was the first book in a long time that I read in one sitting, and stayed up way past my bedtime to read. It is haunting, scary, and edgy ... it pulled me right in from the first page and I was scared reading it, but I didn't know why. It is genuinely unlike any book I've ever read before and after I finished reading it, I immediately skimmed through it again. Reid does an incredible job of leaving your bread crumbs along the way without you knowing it, and the ending comes together in a way that totally shocks you yet is still realistic (nothing worse when you get to the end of a thriller and the ending is unrealistic). The revelation at the end absolutely blows your mind. It's an absolute thrill of a read.
After I finished this book and did some googling to read up more about it, and I discovered that the author was Canadian, it was his debut novel, and it is being adapted to a movie that is coming out on Netflix in early 2020! I'm really curious to see how this one will play out in a movie (it'll star Jesse Plemons and Toni Colette). This is one that I'd highly highly recommend reading the book before watching the movie. It's only 200ish pages, so you can do it!
