Book Review: I'm Not Dying With You Tonight by Kimberly Jones and Gilly Segal

Book: 112/150

Rating: 4/5

Lena and Campbell's paths cross in an unlikely circumstance: Campbell is new to school and working the concession stand at a football game when a fight breaks out which leads to a riot. At the same time Lena is at the concession stand buying something when fights break out and her and Campbell are stuck in the concession stand together and have to stick together to try and get home safely.

The story was really fast paced; I like when books take place over the course of a day (or in this case, an evening). Lena and Campbell's perspectives alternate throughout the book and even though adrenaline is running high and they're in a constant state of dodging danger, you get insights of their family life, relationships, and how these contribute to their worldview.

One of the parts of the book that stood out to me the most was when they are trying to leave the school grounds where the fights are taking place, Campbell sees the police and feels safe, and that they will be okay because the police are there. Lena, on the other hand, practically has a panic attack when she sees the police and fears that she'll be wrongfully detained.

INDWYT is a great and accessible read for starting conversations on race; the fact that it was written by both a Black and white author I think is fantastic.
