Book Review: Dear Child by Romy Hausmann
Book: 177
Rating: 4/5
I was feeling a thriller this weekend (it’s been a while since I’ve read one), and this one was just the bingeable thriller I needed.
Described as Room meets Gone Girl, Dear Child tells the story of a woman who flees her captor who held her and her two children captive in a cabin in the woods. After she and her children make it to safety: authorities question if she’s really who she claims she is. Is she Lena Beck, the 23 year old who vanished 13 years ago, or someone else?
Around 75 pages, I figured I had the whole plot figured out and expected the book to be predictable. Just over the halfway mark, I could not put the book down and there were a few twists thrown my way I did not see coming - some to the point where I had to re-read pages to make sure I really knew what was going on. Hausmann did a great job early on in the book setting these up. This was her English language debut, and I look forward to checking out her future work!
I liked the multiple POVs, and I love when a child is one of the points of view: when you can’t tell if they’re being brutally honest or masterfully manipulative.
Check this one out it you’re looking for a slower burn but worth the wait thriller.
