Audiobook Review: Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman by Lindy West
Book: 149/150
Rating: 4.5/5
As promised, since I finished Shit, Actually by Lindy West I hit up my Overdrive app so fast to download the audio to her first book and memoir, Shrill. I needed to listen to this one (vs. reading it) because Lindy has the best delivery and honestly I love to listen to non-fiction/memoirs read by the author. I love hearing them tell their own stories.
The two stories that stuck out to me the most was her story on her abortion and her vehemently challenging comedians to maybe like... not make rape jokes? And try to convince them that rape isn't funny and they should consider the impacts that telling these jokes have on their audience? Even though this debate happened a few years ago it is insane to me that male comedians (and their fans) think that their right to tell rape jokes is more important than the impact that these jokes have.
Lindy has a super conversational writing style which makes it such a great listen. She doesn't at all sound like she's reading but like she's talking to you and telling you her life story. I love how she delved into her relationships: with her parents, her husband, and most importantly herself.
I cannot wait to dive into The Witches are Coming and watch her TV show Shrill. Lindy, you have a new forever fan!
