Audiobook Review: Over the Top by Jonathan Van Ness

"You are strong, you're a Kelly Clarkson song, you got this."
Summary: Before taking the world by storm in Netflix's Queer Eye reboot, JVN grew up in a small Midwestern town performing self-taught gymnastics and (on the ground) figure skating routines. This, along with his 'over the top-ness', made him an easy target an endured years of judgement, ridicule, and trauma. Over the Top uncovers the pain and passion it took to end up becoming the model of self-love and acceptance that Jonathan is today.
Thoughts: This is the quickest I've ever listened to an audiobook. Generally I reserve them for my commutes but I found myself taking the initiative to cook and clean just so I can listen to this one.
JVN narrates himself, which is a pure delight. His energy is contagious, and he is vulnerable with sharing what he has learned from his addiction, trauma, and hardships. I loved hearing about his relationship with his mom, and was surprised that his time with Queer Eye was only about a chapter of the book. Don't let this deter you though, just goes to show JVN has many stories to share before he made it big with Queer Eye. I would recommend this audiobook to everyone, but if you are looking to venture into the world of audiobooks you should for sure check this one out. It is engaging, a fairly short listen, and equal parts funny and inspirational.
