Audiobook Review: Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
Book: 78/150
Rating: 4/5
Summary: Franny Stone has always been a wanderer. By following the ocean’s tides and the birds that soar above, she can forget the losses that have haunted her life. But when the wild she loves begins to disappear, Franny can no longer wander without a destination. She arrives in remote Greenland with one purpose: to find the world’s last flock of Arctic terns and follow them on their final migration. She convinces Ennis Malone, captain of theSaghani, to take her onboard, winning over his eccentric crew with promises that the birds she is tracking will lead them to fish.
As the Saghani fights its way south, Franny’s new shipmates begin to realize that she is full of dark secrets: night terrors, an unsent pile of letters, and an obsession with pursuing the terns at any cost. When the story of her past begins to unspool, Ennis and his crew must ask themselves what Franny is really running toward—and running from.
Thoughts: Just so you can gauge how easily influenced I am, I downloaded this book after seeing *two* people on bookstagram talk about it. I read the summary and while it sounded interesting, it was definitely one that was out of my comfort zone and didn't know how much I would enjoy it. I've been listening to so many audiobooks lately since working from home and decided to give this one a go.
I thought this one would be more focused on animal extinction and the science and reasoning behind that, but I was pleasantly surprised that this book was very character driven. Franny's past was revealed in bits and pieces in the present and flashbacks. Just when you think the story is almost hitting a lull, you get a little tidbit into her past and what brought her in a race across the world to chase the Arctic terns.
I highly recommend this one on audio because the narration is fantastic, and Barrie Kreinik's accent is amazing to listen to.
Thank you to Libro.fm, MacMillan Audio, and Charlotte McConaghy for an ALC of this audiobook. This book comes out on August 4, 2020.
