Audiobook Review: Dare to Lead by Brené Brown

Book: 3/100

Rating: 3.5/5

Summary: How do we become great leaders? How can we train and aid great leaders? Brené addresses this and much more in Dare to Lead, and how we can use vulnerability to strengthen our leadership skills. Full summary on Goodreads can be found here.

Thoughts: This book was recommended to me from a colleague after she claimed it helped her overcome her anxieties with public speaking. Well, sign me up! I thought that the book overall was easy to follow along. Brené has an amazing voice (as she should, she’s a public speaker), and her enthusiasm and personality was palpable when listening to it.

A few of the criticisms I’ve seen with this book is that it is repetitive of her previous work, and that it is too centered in a corporate workplace. This is my first Brené Brown book and I also work in the corporate world, so I find that a lot of her “in the boardroom” examples apply to my job. She also gives great tips on how to receive criticism and feedback, how to be vulnerable, and how small actions can lead to better teams and better leaders, which I think can all help me personally and professionally!

I think I would have rated this book higher and it would have had more of an impact on me if I listened to it in a shorter time frame (I started the audio in the fall of 2019 and then just finished it in January).
