A very witchy week

WHAT I READ

I had a very witchy week! I read The Nature of Witches by Rachel Griffin, a YA witchy book on witches whose powers are strongest in the season of their birth (except for our girl Clara, an everwitch, who’s magic is tied to every season). Through their powers they’ve maintained the climate but that’s come to change as the atmosphere becomes more erratic - it’s up to Clara to control her magic to get the climate under control. I liked it! It was pretty YA, but a fun read.

I also read In Defense of Witches by Mona Chollet - a non-fiction book celebrating the witch as a symbol of female rebellion. I wanted to love this one SO MUCH but it didn’t do anything for me. It kind of felt like there weren’t any new ideas in here.

Another book that fell flat for me was The People We Keep by Alison Larkin. I heard it was a family saga and thought it would be right up my alley but unfortunately, the main character was just too annoying, and for some reason I don't love books with a 'musical' element?! I was fine with Daisy Jones and the Six but for whatever reason I just do not care for reading about someone pursuing a musical career.

Matrix by Lauren Groff was one of the most challenging books I've ever read - Groff's vocabulary is next level. There's no doubt her writing is beautiful and lyrical - this book got some good use out of my page tabs. I liked the story, the characters were just okay to me, and the writing was beautiful; I think this book just didn't really click with me. I can see how some people loved it and some didn't!

FAVOURITES FROM THE WEEK

Authentic Mexican

Last year I discovered Maria's Tortas Jalisco - an incredible authentic Mexican takeout. It's family run and seriously the best food PERIOD I have ever had. The taco plate (tinga de pallo), esquites, totopos and wet burrito are unreal, but the beef birilla quesedilla con comsome 'quesotacos' are absolutely out of this world! They're a half quesadilla half taco, with a Mexican gravy to dip it in.

I hadn't ordered here in a while, but had some good news to celebrate this week which was cause for celebration with takeout! It's my go-to place when I need a pick-me-up lunch throughout the workweek.

My favourite Saturday

My favourite Saturdays are spent getting my nails done, eating waffles and drinking a London Fog at Cannon Coffee, and browsing and buying books at The City and The City books. I could honestly spend every day doing this and never get bored. When we got to Cannon we were told that it would be about 45 mins to get a table, so we decided to browse for books and grab some drinks to go afterward. When we came back (miracle!) there was a table for two waiting for us. Until next Saturday!
