A Special Place for Women by Laura Hankin
BOOK 52 OF 2021
RATING: 4.5/5
What a FUN book! Wow this was exactly what I needed/wanted to read right now.
Jillian Beckley, a recently laid off journalist, goes undercover to report on NYC's most secretive and elite club - run by powerful and rich women who have the power to elect women to office, get the attention of celebrities, and have had 'whispers' of what they're really capable of following them around for years. Jillian is looking for a big break back into journalist, and thinks that infiltrating and reporting on this elusive club is the way to do it. I LOVE a good social commentary, and this book dives into elitism, and performative vs. real feminism/sisterhood.
Jillian had a great internal monologue and I found myself laughing out loud when reading. I was a bit unsure of the wild twist that takes place about 60% into the book, but I just went with it and it made me really love the book. There were a few ~far fetched~ plot points at the end that lined up a little too perfectly, which is why I knocked a star off.
This is a really fun book, kind of comparable to Finlay Donovan is Killing It. Funny protagonist who gets herself into some bizarre situations. I can also definitely see this one being a movie.
I already have this author's work teed up on my Kobo to read the next time I'm looking for a fun book or stuck in a slump, and I cant wait to read it!
